Some disasters are not suitable for children.

Can I remove them from the list?

Yes you can. Read on.

How to customize the disasters list?

Locate the netdisaster.xml file, next to the main Go.exe file. Duplicate the xml file if you intend to modify it. Open the file with a standard text editor (or even better, with a free text editor having syntax highlighting capabilities, such as the brilliant Notepad++). The netdisaster.xml file includes all information necessary for building the disasters drop-down menu.

If you have some basic knowledge in xml editing, you won't have a hard time customizing disasters' and categories' names, or even rearrange disasters in categories, and removing disasters that you dislike. For people who don't know anything about it, I'll write some more explanation about the process in the Help section later.
